Fun Facts About Sapphires

Fun Facts About Sapphires
Author:
Amna Javeri
It’s September! Summer has passed and winter blues are setting in. What better gemstone to ring in the winter than the calming influence of the Sapphire. Every month is associated with a gemstone, and for those born in September, the Sapphire is their gemstone.

Sapphire’s have been around for centuries; however, it was when Prince Charles of England placed an exquisite diamond and sapphire ring on the finger of his fiancée, Princess Diana, that attention moved away from diamonds to sapphires as an engagement gemstone.

That tradition continues today, and sapphire’s are the second most used engagement stone today. The beauty of a sapphire is not linked just to the blue we are all aware of. Sapphires come in pink, yellow, purple, black, and all the tones and hues in between.

Padparadscha sapphires are a pale pink variety. Composed of the mineral corundum, sapphires are made from the same mineral species as rubies. The sapphire is one of the most durable gems after the diamond according to the Mohs scale.

Cleaning your Sapphire

Sapphires are relatively easy to clean. Sapphires don't require professional services, meaning you can easily clean sapphires at home! We suggest using warm water and dish soap. Just make sure your soap doesn't contain any moisturizer or any ingredients used for polishing. Take a toothbrush and use the bristles to gently clean the surface of your sapphires.

Fun Facts About Sapphires

When you consider the origins of the word sapphire, it starts to make a lot of sense why this is the name for such deep blue gemstones. Did you know that the name sapphire has both Greek and Latin origins? In Greece, sappheiros is the Greek word for blue. Similarly, the Latin word for blue is sapphirus.

If you are born in September, you are lucky because your birthstone is one of the most royal gemstones to ever exist. Not only do sapphires represent royalty, but they are also a symbol of loyalty. You could also say that sapphires are a sign of strength, seeing as they are the second strongest stone in existence after diamonds.

Sapphires have been associated with desirability and harnessing love to one’s person. Legend has it that Helen of Troy, the face that launched a thousand ships, had a large star sapphire, which is said to hold the key to her desirability.

The sapphire is even mentioned in the bible a dozen times. In Isaiah 54:11, the bible says, “Oh thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold I will lay thy stones with fair colours and lay thy foundations with sapphires.”

Legend has it that sapphires contain healing powers. Culturally, sapphires are thought to deflect negative energy and defend against evil spirits. When you wear sapphires, you can think of the gemstones as being your personal protector, like a guardian angel.

Where to Find the Prettiest Sapphires

Are you interested in purchasing a sapphire for someone you love? Whether you are in search of sapphire earrings for someone born in September, or you want to surprise the love of your life with a sapphire as an anniversary gift, Javeri Jewelers has a variety of designer sapphire jewelry, including gorgeous diamond and sapphire bracelets, and rings.
