Did you know that Amethyst is the birthstone of February, and is the stone of kings & royalty. A rich, vibrant purple to clear those winter blues away. Part of the quartz family, the amethyst is an extremely wearable stone and easily cuts into wondrous shapes. The word amethyst translates into “Not Drunk”, so it's said that the wearer will never feel the effects of alcohol. It's also February's symbol of love.
One of the myths of the stone is that Dionysus, the god of intoxication and wine was pursuing a maiden named Amethystos, who refused his affections. Amethystos prayed to the gods to remain chaste, a prayer which the goddess Artemis answered, transforming her into a white stone. Humbled by Amethystos’s desire to remain chaste, Dionysus poured wine over the stone as an offering, dyeing the crystals purple.
